Onion Strings

Onion Strings

I cannot express how gratifying that it was to have these crispy beautiful onions turn out as ace-in-the-hole perfectly as they did.  Holy bananas.  They brought me pure unadulterated joy.

I am not ashamed of this.

You must try them.

Onion Strings
  • 1 whole Large Onion
  • 2 cups Buttermilk
  • 2 cups All-purpose Flour
  • 1 Tablespoon (scant) Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon (to 1/2 Teaspoon) Cayenne Pepper
  • Black Pepper To Taste
  • 1 quart (to 2 Quarts) Canola Oil
Slice onion very thin. Place in a baking dish, cover with buttermilk and soak for at least an hour.

Combine dry ingredients and set aside.

Heat oil to 375 degrees or about Med-High.  Grab a handful of onions, throw into the flour mixture, tap to shake off excess, and plunge into hot oil. Fry and remove as soon as golden brown.  Enjoy.

Spicy Fry Sauce
  • 2/3 cup Mayo
  • 1/4 cup Ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons Cayenne Pepper
Combine and watch it disappear with those fantabulous Onion Strings.
